Chapter Thirteen

Nash watched Lana walk away as his phone began to buzz on the table where he’d left it. She was off to get ready for their day, and her retreat provided an incredible view. Begrudgingly, he gave up his position to answer the call. “Winchester.”

“Hey,” Knox returned. “I started to think you weren’t going to answer. I’m not interrupting anything am I?”

Nash grinned, thinking of the easy flirtation that had developed and the way Lana had begun to let her guard down after telling him how badly he’d hurt her when he left. The confession had gutted him, but the air was beginning to clear, and that gave him hope. He still owed her a proper apology for leaving things between them the way he had when he joined the Marshals, but he had faith there would be time for that soon. As long as he didn’t screw up or accidentally push her away before then. “I was just washing dishes,” he told Knox, answering the nearly forgotten question. “I didn’t hear the phone right away.”

“Uh-huh,” Knox said, sounding wholly unconvinced. “Well, if you’re done doing dishes...”

“I am.”

“My guys finished combing Lana’s place last night,” he said. “They found a few bugs.”

Every muscle in Nash’s body snapped to attention. “What kind of bugs?”

“Listening devices,” Knox said. “We thought that might be the case yesterday but needed to get a team in there with the right equipment to perform a proper search. The devices aren’t too high-tech. We’re running the serial numbers to see if we can trace them back to the purchaser. My guess is that they were online purchases made via prepaid credit card, but you never know. Guys like Bane don’t typically choose their lackeys based on IQ. Regardless, you should let Lana know and try to think of everything the two of you said while you were there packing her things. Chances are it was recorded.”

Nash felt a bead of fury rising in him, swelling in his core and chest until he thought he’d explode. “Your team knew last night? And you’re just calling now?”

A length of silence stretched over the line.

“Well, yeah,” Knox said, finally. “I was trying to give you some time to sleep. You were up like forty hours straight.”

Nash locked his jaw. This was the problem with working with family members. Not a single member of his team would’ve given two shakes how long he was up or how tired he might be. They would’ve delivered the obvious need-to-know information as soon as they had it. But not family. Family blurred the lines between what was acceptable on and off the clock. They received important news, then sat on it. So Nash could rest. He pressed angry fingers against his temple. “Do you know how much has transpired since Lana and I were inside her home? How many hours? What I remember today won’t be nearly as precise or detailed as what I might’ve remembered yesterday. It’s the reason we interview witnesses at the crime scene instead of calling them the next day,” he snapped.
